from the Leader Paper: IN a drug-induced coma, Carl Hemmings mistakenly thought he had accidentally drowned his son.

It was the lowest point of Mr Hemmings' five-year battle with cancer.

"After waking up, I thought there was going to be a funeral," Mr Hemmings said.

When his wife, Kim, told him that their son was fine at home, the relief was overwhelming. The incident was one of many rough times for the Ringwood East family.

A passionate cyclist, Mr Hemmings was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in January 2007, he had to give up the bike.

Mrs Hemmings gave birth to their son Lachlan in June that year.

"Having him keeps you going," Mr Hemmings said.

Mr Hemmings has spent long stints at the Maroondah Hospital in ICU, and praised the staff and doctors. The cancer is in remission and Mr Hemmings is riding when he can :-)
